News from Kalbarri SES

Mac Holt reports that Kalbarri SES had no operational call outs in August. Training, practical evaluation of Iveco unit as potential future vehicle replacement, and involvement in the Mid-West Regional exercise, kept us from being bored. The Regex had many planned scenarios to test the volunteers - but mother nature provided an unplanned flash flood which impacted a major activity.

FLOOD RESCUE OPERATIONS - FIT FOR TASK SURVEY

DFES have requested our assistance in circulating notice of a survey being conducted on the above subject by the Deakin University.  Researchers from the University have been working closely with SES organisations Australia-wide with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the physical requirements of tasks you are asked to perform when responding to operational call outs.

The survey is aimed at all qualified Flood Rescue Operators.

The University will be placing high value on all opinions, especially those who are out doing the job, and asks questions regarding how important they believe a task is in relation to achieving overall objectives, how often they perform it, and how physically demanding they perceive it to be.   Participation in the survey is entirely voluntary (and anonymous) and the responses that are provided will be compiled with those of all other participants and reported in a manner which protects your confidentiality.

Participation by qualified Flood Rescue Operators would be greatly appreciated.   The link for the survey is below and the closing date for the survey is 6 October 2013

SES VOLUNTEERS ATTEND TO STORM DAMAGE

DESTRUCTIVE winds have torn through Secret Harbour, about 70km south of Perth, damaging about 20 homes.  Violent winds have brought down trees and damaged about 20 houses in Secret Harbour, just north of Mandurah overnight.  A fallen tree smashed onto a gazebo in Anstey Park in Secret Harbour.

A 100km/h wind gust was recorded at Mandurah at 1.53am today and Cape Leeuwin has been buffeted by strong winds in excess of 75km/h since about 5am, with a maximum gust of 96km/h at 7.12am.  The SES hasreceived 24 calls for assistance for minor roof damage, with the majority of calls from people in Secret Harbour Boulevard, just metres from the ocean.

The Rockingham / Kwinana SES Unit have been active since 2 am attending request for assistance from the public. There are a number of SES Units assisting them  in the operation including Canning, Armadale and Mundurah. A spokesperson from the Rockingham / Kwinana SES Units said" there are presently 37 SES Volunteers in the field and they hope to complete all repairs by midday".

The strong cold front has dumped heavy rain on the city and is threatening destructive winds in excess of 125km/h in the south of the state from Mandurah to Albany. Widespread, heavy showers brought decent falls across the metropolitan area to 9am, with Bickley recording 29mm, Perth 19mm, Jandakot and Champion Lakes 18mm.  Swanbourne has also had 18mm and Perth Airport 17mm.  Perth has now had nearly 40mm for September, and is on track to reach the monthly average of just over 80mm.

And the city is facing another wintry day, with showers and storms forecast with a maximum temperature of 19C. The Bureau is tipping 100 per cent likelihood of more rain, with 10mm-25mm possible.  Showers are tipped on and off for the next week.

Tornado Hits Maddington

Paul Hollamby, Local Manager, Gosnells State Emergency Service Unit reports that around 3.30am on Sunday morning, the first request for assistance was received by Gosnells State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers. Over the next 18 hours, 105 SES volunteers, 18 Bush Fire Brigade (BFB) volunteers and numerous members of the public worked tirelessly to protect property from the tornado.  To compound the devastation the volunteers were dealing with, the Bureau of Meteorology advised that additional severe winds were expected between 11pm Sunday night through to 5 am Monday morning and was expected to be a once in every 4 year event.

By late Sunday afternoon Gosnells SES had responded to over 55 requests from the local community for assistance. The damage was significant and 13 other metropolitan SES units sent teams to assist the teams from Gosnells SES. It has been estimated that over 40 tarpaulins, 20 cubic metres of sand and 2000 sandbags were used in Maddington.  Although the weather conditions were not ideal, the residents of Maddington demonstrated true community spirit. Some helping the SES fill sandbags to secure tarpaulins on roofs, while others provided welcomed hot food and drink to keep at bay the cold winds and rain.

“A number of SES volunteers commented how grateful they were for the effort of the community” said Paul Hollamby, Local Manager Gosnells State Emergency Service Unit.  The expertise of the City of Gosnells staff and various contractors enabled the volunteers to protect and secure homes.  An area from Gosnells Road East through to Ellis Brook Reserve had significant tree damage causing power lines and poles to be damaged. Volunteers waited until Western Power made this area safe before being able to provide assistance.

The 105 SES volunteers came from Armadale, Bayswater, Bassendean, Cockburn, CSU, Gosnells, Kalamunda, Melville, Mundaring, Northshore, Rockingham, ROSS, Serpentine/Jarrahdale and Swan. Gosnells BFB provided 18 volunteers, 3 Salvation Army volunteers attended to welfare for all involved, and supported by City of Gosnells and Department of Fire and Emergency Service.

Mac Holt From Kalbarri SES reports that a four day Rope Rescue Systems course highlight was the practical challenges in the Kalbarri Gorges - although there wasn't much spare time to take in the views. A fun, competitive series of rope, first aid and radio comms' challenges for four teams gave an 'edge' to a refresher training night. Coming up for SES week we have a BBQ organised for members, families, employers and supporters in our town.

Go orange to show thanks to SES volunteers  Wednesday 13 November 2013

Today is national Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW Day) when all Australians are being encouraged to wear orange to say thanks to the nation’s 40,000 State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers.  Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Wayne Gregson said SES volunteers, who were always highly visible when responding to emergency incidents in their orange overalls, had a passion for helping people.  "West Australians can show their gratitude to the dedicated men and women of the SES by wearing an orange item today,” Commissioner Gregson said.

"In the past year, the SES in WA has responded to more than 1,580 calls for help across the State and volunteers donated more than 21,000 hours to assist local communities.   "This national day is an acknowledgement of the hours of service the State’s 2,000 SES volunteers spend attending to emergencies and supporting other emergency responders.”

Commissioner Gregson said being an SES volunteer required a lot of hours of training and an ongoing commitment to sacrifice their time and risk their safety to help people in need. "The SES responds to cyclones, floods, storms and earthquakes, assists WA Police with land rescues and searches, and works with firefighters during major bushfires,” he said.

"On behalf of all West Australians I commend SES volunteers for continuing to volunteer their time and putting the needs of others before their own.”  Today the skills of the SES will be on show in an abseil challenge that will be held on the face of the 100 metre high enex100 building on St Georges Terrace in the Perth CBD.
WOW Day is one of the many events held during SES Week from 11 to 17 November, where emergency services volunteers are recognised and thanked for their contribution and commitment.

Visit www.dfes.wa.gov.au/SESWeek or www.wearorangewednesday.com.au.

SESVA President Gordon Hall said" Many of the highly trained West Australian SES emergency responders, all Volunteers, will join SES Volunteers throughout Australia in wearing orange to work today to show who they are and what else they do for their community".   Gordon also said "Many other community members will be wearing ribbons as a mark of respect and acknowledgement of the many sacrifices SES Volunteers make in assisting their communities in responding to many emergencies and aA number of local governments are flying the SES flag today as recognition for the tireless hours, hard work and truly altruistic approach the SES Volunteers have within their communities".
